at Skokie Public Library

From time to time, both full and part time job openings occur. Positions include supervisory and non-supervisory, librarians, information assistants, computer assistants, catalogers, shelvers, clerks, and maintenance personnel.

Part-time volunteer opportunities are also available at Skokie Public Library. These opportunities may be regularly scheduled, or may occur on an as-needed basis for special projects. Anyone over the age of 14 may apply to be a volunteer. Volunteer opportunities may include reading to the blind, helping patrons use computers, clerical responsibilities, assisting children with crafts, helping librarians plan programming for teens or other patrons, or cleaning library videos.

Applications for paid positions are only accepted for positions listed below. Applications for volunteer positions are available Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm in the Administration Office on the third floor of the Library. Completed applications are kept on file for one year and are often the primary source for filling job openings.

Desktop and Device Administrator

This position is responsible for the administration and maintenance of the 400 Library desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. Responsibilities will include establishing and enforcing best practices, and for managing all day-to-day desktop and device provisioning and maintenance activities, including computer imaging; workstation and device security; software distribution and application management; patch management; and maintaining asset inventories.

Required education/experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field is preferred, or a combination of education and equivalent experience
  • At least 3 years of related work experience

Required skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of modern Windows desktop operating systems
  • Experience with Microsoft domain technologies
  • The ability to write scripts in the Windows environment
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently, under deadlines, with minimal supervision
  • Quality-focused with a positive customer service and team attitude
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills

Preferred skills:

  • Experience managing hardware/software in a public environment
  • Experience with Mac OSX, iOS, and Android operating systems
  • Experience working in a dual authentication environment (Active Directory and Open Directory)
  • Experience with Windows zero/lite touch deployment strategies
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, VDI, Terminal Services, UEM, and/or application virtualization
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, client management tools such as SCCM, Kace, Altirs, etc.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Build, support, and maintain the infrastructures required to manage Windows (85%), OSX (5%), and iOS (10%) desktops and devices
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives for centralized management (OS deployment, application deployment, patch management)
  • Maintain desktop and device security
  • Provide support, research analysis, and recommendations for desktop and device software and hardware purchases
  • Provide Tier-2 level helpdesk support as required
  • Work on projects as assigned

Physical requirements:

  • Strength to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to troubleshoot and install equipment wherever necessary, including on the floor, under desks, overhead, etc.

Starting salary: $42,500

Bookmobile Assistant
- 20.5 total hours per week
Mondays from 1:00 to 6:00pm
Fridays from 9:00am to 6:00pm (includes one-hour unpaid lunch)
Saturdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm (includes half-hour unpaid lunch)

This position assists the Bookmobile Librarian in providing appropriate and easily accessible library materials for patrons, and operates, drives, and maintains the Bookmobile.

Education and experience:

  • High school diploma
  • Some college desirable
  • Public library or other service experience


  • Familiarity with circulation procedures and related automation
  • Familiarity with Dewey Decimal classification and arrangement of materials
  • Physical stamina (including ability to lift 30-pound book bags)
  • Ability to work with a variety of people
  • Familiarity with, and interest in, popular reading materials desirable
  • Valid Illinois driver's license required; Class B (Commercial Drivers License) license or willingness to obtain one


  • Preparing and operating bookmobile
  • Retrieving materials requested by patrons from the main library
  • Checking out materials for patrons
  • Recommending books and DVDs to patrons
  • Assisting with maintaining the bookmobile
  • Shelving and maintaining books in proper order
  • Maintaining collection in good physical condition
  • Driving bookmobile
  • Other duties as assigned

Starting pay is $16.50 per hour.
