Letter from Katie Tarbox

to students and the Skokie Public Library community

It was such a pleasure to visit with you during my visit this past October. I appreciated hearing your honesty and thoughtfulness surrounding the complex issue of the Internet. I am never surprised to learn how intelligent you are.

I can't emphasize to you enough that ultimately, you will be the one to decide whether or not you are safe on the Internet. You have the power to decide whether or not you will enter chat rooms, continue to talk to unknown people and, further, if you decide to meet someone over the Internet. Remember, there is no way to ever really know who you are talking to. It's quite easy to believe that you are actually talking to an attractive teenager; it's harder to believe the reality that the person could be much older and far from picture perfect.

I wish you all the best and it's my hope that you continue to stay safe over the Internet.

Best,

Katie Tarbox
